From the Publisher:Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyadej, the only king ever born in the United States, came to the throne of his country in 1946 and is now the world's longest-serving monarch. The King Never Smiles, the first independent biography of Thailand's monarch, tells the unexpected story of Bhumibol's life and sixty-year rule - how a Western-raised boy came to be seen by his people as a living Buddha, and how a king widely seen as beneficent and apolitical could in fact be so deeply political and autocratic.Paul Handley provides an extensively researched, factual account of the king's youth and personal development, ascent to the throne, skillful political maneuverings, and attempt to shape Thailand as a Buddhist kingdom. Handley takes full note of Bhumibol's achievements in art, in sports and jazz, and he credits the king's lifelong dedication to rural development and the livelihoods of his poorest subjects. But, looking beyond the widely accepted image of the king as egalitarian and virtuous, Handley portrays an anti-democratic monarch who, together with allies in big business and the corrupt Thai military, has protected a centuries-old, barely modified feudal dynasty. When at nineteen Bhumibol assumed the throne, the Thai monarchy had been stripped of power and prestige. Over the ensuing decades, Bhumibol became the paramount political actor in the kingdom, silencing critics while winning the hearts and minds of his people. The book details this process and depicts Thailand's unique constitutional monarch - his life, his thinking, and his ruling philosophy.About the Author:Paul M. Handley is a freelance journalist who lived and worked as a foreign correspondent in Asia for more than twenty years, including thirteen in Thailand.

The King Never Smiles: A Biography of Thailand's Bhumibol Adulyadej

The Rise and Decline of Thai Absolutism

This book examines the development of Thailand from the integration of Siam into the European world economy at the beginning of the nineteenth century, up to the emergence of Thailand as a modern nation state in the twentieth century. It concentrates in particular on the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910), during which period the state was modernised, the power of the great nobles was subordinated to the state, and a modern bureaucracy and education system were created. However, as the author demonstrates, the absolutist state contained the seeds of its own destruction: although it was modernising and progressive, it also worked to preserve the existing social structure, and was opposed by a newly emerging, modern, educated bureaucratic class, which looked for a change in the political structure to give them a more active political role.

The Rise and Decline of Thai Absolutism

Genders and Sexualities in Modern Thailand

Many foreign observers of the Land of Smiles are familiar with a narrow range of gender relations and sexual practices in Thailand, from the fanciful portrayal of 19th-century harem life in The King and I, to recent media coverage of sex tourism and AIDS. Yet serious study of patterns of sexuality, femininity, and masculinity in Thailand is relatively new. This book is a rare collection by scholars from around the world and across social disciplines who are tackling these issues. The essays urge the reader to look beyond fantasies of Thailand as an oriental sexual paradise or land of sexploitation to historical and contemporary forms of gender and eroticism. Studies of the changing opinions and practices among villagers and urbanites, the creative expressions of novelists and aristocrats, and the concerns of early women's magazines and recent AIDS-prevention campaigns, reveal the extraordinary diversity of debates about gender and sexual issues in 20th-century Thailand.Avoiding simplistic approaches to gender studies and sexuality research, the authors discuss how interpretations of gender roles, marriage, and intimate relationships differ between men and women; cultural regions; Thai and immigrant Chinese communities; and heterosexually and homosexually active groups -- as well as between residents of Thailand and their foreign observers. By questioning accounts of Thailand as a place where gender is fluid and sexuality is free, the book unravels the complex processes by which Thai men and women understand themselves, appealing to both general readers and scholars of Thai society.

Genders and Sexualities in Modern Thailand

Making Out In Thai

Making Out In ThaiI found this to be a very useful 'pocketbook'. The five tones in the Thai language are represented by special marks on the words with phonetic pronunciation.
The phrases in the book are everyday 'common Thai' as spoken by the man (or woman!) in the street. This is not a dry 'correct' book by any means!
The book has phrases and sayings to fit many occasions, from eating out to dating!
This is a good short-cut to being able to speak some Thai like the Thais do - not as some awkward 'overly correct' language student!
Learning Thai is fun if you let it be - don't get serious about it - let it come in its own time.....this book will help you!

Making Out in Thai

The construction of wooden houses raised on stilts, which help to escape floods and pests, is a phenomenon found across Southeast Asia. Over many centuries each country has developed its own unique tradition. Thailand is no exception and, indeed, each of the country's four main regions has developed its own distinctive style, making the wooden houses of Thailand among the most widely diverse and beautiful examples of Southeast Asian architecture. The Thai House not only traces the history of these versatile buildings, but also explains the stages in their construction, the beliefs that underlie the positioning of every architectural element, and the complex ceremonies celebrating their construction. Beautiful photographs and authoritative texts celebrate a wide variety of Thai houses.

The Thai House: Its History and Evolution
